Ecología trófica Su dieta se puede dividir en dos tipos según el tamaño de la presa: dieta limnética, donde las presas son de pequeño tamaño tales como rotíferos, copépodos, algunos insectos, etc.; y dieta tipo béntico, con presas de mayor tamaño como larvas de insectos (sobre todo quironómidos), anfípodos, isópodos, pelecípodos, planarias, odonatos, huevos de espinoso, etc. (Larson, 1976; Gross y Anderson, 1984; Snyder, 1984; Wooton, 1984; Schluter, 1993; Hart y Gill, 1994; Walker, 1997). Se alimenta en Galicia (según 22 contenidos estomacales) básicamente de larvas de Chironomidae (59,66%), seguido de Ostracoda (18,9%), Simuliidae (9,77%), Leuctridae (2,97%), Oligochaeta (2,55%), Baetidae (1,49%), Ecnomidae (1,06%), Chironomidae (1,06%), Hydracharina (0,85%), Elmidae (0,64%), Ceratopogonidae (0,42%), Sericostomatidae (0,21%) y Trichoptera (0,21%) (Sánchez-Hernández et al., 2012)1. La dieta del espinoso ( 21 presas en 6 contenidos estomacales) en el río Ladra (Lugo) se basa en macroinvertebrados acuáticos y se compone de Chironomidae (57,14%), Baetidae (19,05%), Ecnomidae (9,52%), Ostracoda (4,76%), Elmidae (4,76%) y Simuliidae (4,76%) (Sánchez-Hernández et al., 2011)1.
