Interacciones con otras especies Como en el caso de otros cetáceos, el delfín mular común interacciona con otras especies ya sea con interés exploratorio, social, de juego, cooperativo tanto de índole alimentaria como antipredatoria, o bien de forma agresiva. En estas últimas interacciones, el delfín mular actúa como agresor y su comportamiento varía desde el acoso a ejemplares de otras especies, hasta la violencia extrema. El delfín mular común es una de las pocas especies de mamíferos que desarrolla agresiones letales a otros mamíferos marinos sin relación con la depredación (Connor et al., 2000). En la Tabla 1 se recogen las interacciones interespecíficas documentadas para el delfín mular común a nivel global y en aguas españolas.

Se han observado numerosos casos de hibridación con otras especies (Crossman et al., 2016) en poblaciones de diferentes áreas (Tabla 2), con descendencia que no solo es capaz de sobrevivir (Árrnason, 1982), sino que además se ha constatado su fertilidad al menos en algunos de los casos (Duffield y Amos, 2001; Amaral et al., 2014).

Depredadores Los principales depredadores del delfín mular común son tiburones de mediano y gran tamaño, tanto que su presencia parece influir tanto en el uso del hábitat como en el tamaño de los grupos del delfín en diferentes regiones de su área de distribución (Heithaus, 2001). Numerosos delfines mulares presentan mordeduras de tiburones. La posición de las mordeduras indican que han sido atacados desde abajo y detrás. Otra fuente de mortalidad para los delfines mulares son las rayas en zonas litorales (Wells y Scott, 2018). Las especies cuya depredación ya sea habitual u ocasional sobre el delfín mular común está documentada se encuentran en la Tabla 3.
